We pay tribute to one of the Jazz Cafe's most beloved genres, soul, with our weekly Saturday club night Soul City.
Connecting the dots between soul, funk, disco, house and Motown classics from across the ages, join our favourite selectors as they dig deep into their record crates and take us on a trip through some of their most-loved party grooves.
Whether you're dancing on our 450 capacity dance floor or drinking cocktails on our mezzanine balcony, Saturday nights at the Jazz Cafe are always a special occasion.
Matt Ford, aka DJ Format, first came to attention at the start of the noughties with a series of sharp 12 inches featuring guest vocalists Chali 2na and Canadian rapper Abdominal, who later became a regular collaborator.
For anyone with even just a passing interest in hip-hop, Ford’s debut album Music For The Mature B-Boy would have been a lifestyle staple; although unashamedly nostalgic for the first golden era of rap it was never derivative – a sentiment perhaps best expressed in the album's title.
For this edition of Soul City, Format will be bringing an exclusive selection of funk and soul for us, with a bit of hip-hop thrown in for good measure.
