Brooklyn Funk Essentials was born out of New York’s buzzing hip-hop-jazz and slam poetry scenes of the early nineties. Originally conceived by producers Arthur Baker and Lati Kronlund as a series of studio jam sessions, the group soon turned into a 12-piece live outfit consisting of some of the finest young musicians, singers, rappers, dub poets and DJs the Big Apple had to offer.
Lati Kronlund is the band leader and plays bass. Other musicians who have played with Brooklyn Funk Essentials over the years includeStephanie McKay, Dizzy Gillespie, Joi Cardwell, Maceo Parker, DJ Smash, Tower of Power, Bill Ware, Michigan & Smiley, Jazzy Nice & Isaac Hayes.
Since their debut single in 1995, a cool re-working of Pharoah Sanders' enduring classic "The Creator has a Masterplan", the Brooklyn Funk Essentials have toured the world sharing the stage with Jamiroquai, James Brown, The Roots, The Meters, Ben Harper, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Iggy Pop, Bootsy Collins, Underworld, Erykah Badu & George Benson. The band have released five albums and countless singles within their 20 years of grooves.
