The Wire presents: Hailu Mergia (Awesome Tapes From Africa)

The Wire presents: Hailu Mergia (Awesome Tapes From Africa)
Tuesday 23rd May 19:00-23:00

The keyboard and accordion maestro Hailu Mergia is arguably the greatest of Brian Shimkovitz's A&R discoveries out of Africa.

He started out playing keys for iconic Ethiopian group Walias Band, whose 1977 recording "Muziqawi Silt" is a defining piece of the country's musical history, before going on to work with legendary Ethio jazz vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke.

Mergia himself is a purveyor of Ethiopian pop for want of a better description, his virtuosity at the accordion a sight to behold.

Joining him for this show which commemorates The Wire's 400th print issue is world music DJ Philou Louzolo.
