We have invited London’s stand out young saxophonist to pay tribute to one of the most important albums of all time, John Coltrane’s Giant Steps on the 60th anniversary of its release.
The record – released in 1960 – completely radicalised the principles of jazz to focus on the solo. Improvising over the ‘Coltrane Changes’ as their known is a rite of passage for jazz musicians but perhaps one of the album’s most challenging aspects is the difficulty of recreating the title track due it’s tempo and rapid chord changes.
We can think of no one better than Chelsea Carmichael, the pre-eminent sax player of her peer group, to take on this task and do the entire album justice. Chelsea and her band will perform the album plus a set of her own material influenced by Coltrane’s music and career.
