A UK Jazz double-header
James Copus + Joe Downard (Double Album Launch)

Tuesday 29th September

Our first fully-seated jazz session is a double celebration of debut albums from two of the latest ones-to-watch on the UK jazz scene: trumpeter James Copus and bassist Joe Downard.

Both artists possess all the quality, style and energy to be up there with the best. This is the first time we get to hear these much-lauded albums live; within the intimate setting of The Jazz Cafe, this is bound to be an unmissable evening.

Joe Downard has been a crucial part of many of the UK’s finest rhythm sections. Now he takes the spotlight with his new sextet and debut album Seven Japanese Tales – a distinctive sonic landscape that brings all his musical influences together in a fresh approach to jazz. Downard’s dynamic musical ability guarantees a multi-faceted, refreshing and highly emotive display.

James Copus’s dazzling trumpet-playing has made him hugely in-demand for projects by the likes of Jorja Smith, Jacob Collier and Joss Stone – not to mention a crucial role in Downard’s own work. His album Dusk, released in July, confirms his promise as a unique leader and composer with seven original compositions of sparkling imagination, sensitivity and punchy fusion.

+ DJ Gordon Wedderburn (GW Jazz) before and in between sets.
