The intersection between jazz and hip-hop has been a home for many artists. Whether it’s producers digging through old records so they can flip a sample, jazz musicians making an amalgam between the sampled track and the OG recording.
In 2003, Madlib was invited into the dank catacombs of the original Blue Note master tapes for a “remix” project. Remixing classics by Gene Harris & The Three Sounds, Donald Byrd, Ronnie Foster and Bobby Hutcherson into outsider works of downtempo and instrumental hip-hop art.
The idea for this gig sprung at the Total Refreshment Studios as Vels Trio were recording their debut EP. The session culminated as they decided to record a version of Donald Byrd’s ‘Steppin Into Tomorrow’, Madlib’s on their mind.
This February, Milestones presents a Vels Trio rendition of Madlib’s ‘Shades Of Blue’ alongside some of London’s heaviest cats.
