Orphy Robinson, winner of this year’s Jazz FM Live Performer Of The Year award, brings his exclusive spiritual jazz take on Van Morrison’s 1968 masterpiece Astral Weeks with his Third Eye All Stars.
With its magical combination of jazz, folk and soul influences Astral Weeks is widely regarded as one of the most influential recordings of 20th century contemporary music.
Nigh on five decades ago a group of leading jazz musicians entered a studio in New York with Van Morrison and produced the classic reford. These musicians included drummer Connie Kay of the Modern Jazz Quartet, bassist Richard Davis (Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy), guitarist Jay Berliner (Charles Mingus) and vibes player Warren Smith who accompanied Sam Rivers.
