Jazz Cafe and The Steve Reid Foundation present:
The Story of Tribe Records with Phil Ranelin & Tribe Renaissance

Thursday 1st August

In association with Gilles Peterson’s Steve Reid Foundation, we celebrate the funk and soul-inflected deep jazz sounds of Tribe Records alongside trombonist and co-founder of the Detroit-based independent label Phil Ranelin, one of the world’s great underground jazz elders.

Tribe produced a decade of spiritual, groovy, funky and soulful jazz layered with political awareness which played a pivotal role in promoting young local talent and raising black social consciousness for future generations. Alongside Wendel Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney and more Phil produced some of the most inspiring music of the era, which continues to be re-released to this day

The man who’s shared bills with the likes of Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp celebrates with a line-up of the UK’s finest musicians:

Phil Ranelin – Trombone
Ben Hadwen – Saxophone
Robert Mitchell – Piano
Neville Malcolm – Upright Bass
Rod Youngs – Drums

Steve Reid Foundation aims to support young people to advance musically through educational initiatives and has been pivotal in the development of some of our finest rising stars. Representing the Foundation, Emanative / Nick Woodmansey provides DJ support with a vinyl set of deep, diverse jazz.
