The heart of Jazz underground
Tru Thoughts Showcase

Thursday 9th March

Brighton record label, Tru Thoughts, is back and this time brings us a plateau of talented new signees and curators who have been conquering all corners of the jazz, hip-hop and soul scene.

Ebi Soda

Only thing that comes to mind when you blend jazz, hip-hop, and no-wave post-punk is Ebi Soda. They are characterized by their use of trombones, drum breaks, electronic soundscapes, breakbeats, and sensual basslines. Formed in the seaside town of Brighton, Ebi Soda keeps a post-punk DIY ethic close to their hearts, with songs often birthed from sweaty smokey university bedrooms rather than that of the big band hall.

Bryony Jarman-Pinto

Raised in a musical family she grew up around a community of people dedicated to the arts. Picking up various instruments and developing her sound over the years, her debut album ‘Cage & Aviary’ spoke to a sophisticated sound of jazz, soul and folk.

Steven Bamidele

Tru Thoughts’ most recent signing returns to the Jazz Cafe after supporting Marlon Craft in 2022. With influences ranging from Marvin Gaye and Radiohead to Lianne La Havas and Solange, Steven crafts his own unique and intricate sound, combining synth textures, syncopated beats, and reverb-drenched falsetto to create psychedelic forward-thinking soul.

Robert Luis (DJ Set)

Playing on live stages for Bestival to SXSW, Tru Thoughts Co-owner takes us through all the best funk, bass, tropical, hip hop, reggae, soul to drum and bass.

Slowe (DJ Set)

Bristol-based producer and artist Slowe (AKA Sophie Hawes) brings us her soothing sounds of soul and hip-hop to the stage. Championed by the likes of BBC Radio 1, her DJ crates are filled with broken beats and innovative percussion that give praise to legends of Dilla, Erykah Badu and Tame Impala.
