“Spine-tingling jazz for heart, head and feet” – The Guardian
The retro-minded, hip-hop savvy West Coast scene that spawned Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin et al is just one indicator of where the current hotbed of jazz is headed; a group of East Coast composer-improvisers led by pianist Vijay Iyer have spent the last decade-plus masterminding a more futuristic approach.
Iyer’s 2017 album Far From Over received huge praise across the board, earning Album of the Year and Artist of the Year in Jazz Times Critics’ and Readers’ Polls. It was also included in the Best of 2017 in Rolling Stone (the only jazz album in their list of top 50 albums), Best of 2017 in the NY Times / NPR (US National Public Radio) / LA Times / Chicago Tribune, and received glowing reviews from Pitchfork and The Guardian.
If you’re looking for the shape of jazz to come, here it is.
