Fast-rising London band Waaju return to perform their sell out tribute to the late Ali Farka Touré, “godfather of the desert blues”, on the great Malian singers birthday.
Ali Farka Touré is one of the African continent’s most internationally renowned musicians. His music is widely viewed as coming at an intersection between traditional Malian music and the North American musical tradition many believe it inspired, the blues.
His music has been featured in numerous TV shows and films, and Touré himself famously appeared in Martin Scorsese’s 2003 documentary Feel Like Going Home, which traced the roots of the blues back to its genesis in West Africa.
His discography showcases his extraordinary musicality and guitar playing, and we can’t wait to welcome Waaju to pay tribute to the Malian legend. Their influences span Africa, South America and beyond, and they have always sought to highlight and explore non-Western musical traditions. To that end, the five-piece band are perfectly placed to present their live showcase of some of Ali Farka Touré’s best works.
