A major force of Jamaican music, the reggae legend who worked on fiery roots tracks with Bunny Lee in the 70s, explored dancehall in the 80s, and combined roots and lovers material.

Named Artist of the Year in Jamaica in both 1974 and 1975, Johnny Clarke became one of the most popular singers on the island, with many of his songs concern his faith and the beliefs of the Rastafari movement, such as anti-violence (as heard on “Let Go Violence”) and legalisation of marijuana (“Legalize It”).

He helped define the “Flying Cymbals” period that preceded the “Roots Rockers” sound of the mid to late 1970s, and was one of the first Jamaican artists signed to Virgin Records’ Frontline subsidiary in 1976, releasing the albums Authorized Version and Rockers Time Now on the label before going on to work with the likes of Mad Professor, King Tubby, Errol Thompson, and Prince Jammy.

Returning to our stage after 6 years, we can’t wait to welcome back Jamaica’s finest for a rare London appearance.
