London based trumpeter Kevin G Davy invites his Quintet to play his favourite numbers from one of the greatest trumpeters of them all; Dizzy Gillespie.
Gillespie’s place in the canon of jazz greats is assured. A virtuoso player and improviser, he added layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity to his compositions previously unheard in jazz.
His combination of musicianship, showmanship, and wit made him a leader of new strands of jazz known as bebop and Afro-Cuban jazz.
His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, scat singing, bent horn, pouched cheeks, and light-hearted personality has remained an enduring symbol to this today of 20th century jazz. Miles Davis himself cites Gillespie as one of his major influences.
