Compared to the likes of Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, and The Doobie Brothers, YGSF’s opening salvo West End Coast evokes the SoCal pop-rock classics of the 1970s whilst also drawing inspiration from Philly-Soul. Thanks to Platts and Lee – two of the UK’s most prolific and versatile pop music linguists – vigorous horn arrangements, orchestral elements and more combine to create a boundary-defying niche that refreshes in an age of conformity and compromise.
This is their first home town gig since completing their latest offering Canyons. Uniquely contemporary yet utterly ensconced in a post-’78, pre-’84 era, you might find yourselves hugging each other in a blissed-out state of recognition.
“I feel like we’re reconnecting people with an era and a way of making and writing music which in today’s mainstream has perhaps lost relevance.”
